Book Description
Excerpt from Ocean Trade and Shipping N der the general and very comprehensive head of Ocean Trade and Shipping come a whole host of separate industries and undertakings. Many of these, and of the rights and liabilities connected with them, have long been the subject of important treatises. To others of them, special reference may be found scattered in business publications here and there. In the case of many, however, it would be difficult to find treat ment of them anywhere. The whole, collectively, have apparently never been dealt with at all. And indeed to supply, in a single small volume, a summary of enterprises so many and so various must needs be a somewhat courageous undertaking. Still, by a process of selection, elimination and condensation, and with the kind and valuable aid of many expert business friends, I have done my best. It is of course an explanatory work, proceeding on broad lines, rather than a technical treatise. It does, however, as I hope, deal with many if not most of the subjects on which information will be useful or at any rate instructive to the naval and military officers for whom it is primarily intended. If this should prove so, I shall be content. To army officers, a knowledge of the machinery of shipping and its working must at the least be interesting, seeing that the transfer and maintenance of oversea forces involve its constant use, while in the event of war sea transport becomes for an imperial Power a military factor of the first importance. Shipping After the War (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: J. M. Robertson
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331254829
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 48
Book Description
Excerpt from Shipping After the War One of the current proposals for the control of trade after the war is a call for partial or general renewal of the old measures known as the Navigation Laws. It is commonly put in the form of a demand that after the war, as at present, no German ship shall be permitted to enter any port in the British Empire. So far as the propaganda has been organised, however, it takes a form which does not directly indicate that aim, but seems to point to action of a more far-reaching kind. On April 3rd, a deputation from the Associated Chambers of Commerce waited upon Mr. Bonar Law and Mr. Runciman, and submitted, "among other resolutions," the following: That action should be taken by the Government to amend the existing Navigation Laws under which subsidized foreign ships can make use of British ports and obtain the benefit of harbour facilities while escaping the payment of harbour dues. Our Merchant Marine

Our Merchant Marine PDF Author: United States Navy Department
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780265448205
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 54
Book Description
Excerpt from Our Merchant Marine: Its Condition as Shown At present there is a great desire in this coun try to share with others in the foreign trade, and it is strongly urged that the Government should give its aid in resurrecting our ocean commercial marine, since it is very evident that our shipping cannot be revived without the same assistance that was given the ocean steam lines of Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany and latterly, Spain. Heretofore, when it has been proposed in Congress to grant Government aid to assist in putting afloat lines of ocean steamers, questions of free trade and tariff have been in troduced to kill the measure, and foreigners who do not wish any competition with their lucrative business, and have plenty of money with which to operate, are always ready to show how much more advantageous it is to Americans that they should have the carrying trade. For eigners generally argue that they receive no subsidies, but who knows but themselves what assistance they receive from their Govern merits?
