Book Description
Excerpt from Longmans' Handbook of English Literature, Vol. 4 It is a period sufficiently remote to gain the charm of distance, and the Spectator and Tom Jones carry us back into a world very different from our own. But it is sufficiently near to make us feel we are in living con tact with it, and Swift and Pope and Johnson are far more real persons to us than Shakspere or Bacon or Milton can be. A Handbook of Labor Literature

A Handbook of Labor Literature PDF Author: Helen Marot

Book Description
Excerpt from A Handbook of Labor Literature: Being a Classified and Annotated List of the More Important Books and Pamphlets in the English Language Many libraries are still neglectful of collecting this material, notwithstanding a new appreciation of its value. It is hoped that this book will help to make these publications accessible to the general reader, and to follow out this idea the addresses of societies will be found in the list of publishers, appended. It has been possible to omit the periodical literature, which is very important, because it is already so well indexed. "Poole's Index," beginning with 1802 and brought down to the present time by the "Annual Literary Index," with the "Cumulative Index" and the index in each number of the "Review of Reviews" makes the periodical literature always accessible down to the present month. It is difficult to know how to make acknowledgment of the assistance received inthe compilation of this work. Suggestions have been received from Professors Jeremiah W. Jenks, Richard T. Ely, Edward W. Bemis and John R. Commons, Mrs. Eliza W. Twitchell, Mr. James F. Rhodes, Mr. Benjamin R. Tucker; and most valuable assistance from Dr. Frederic W. Speirs, Dr. Henry R. Seager and Mr. Morrison I. Swift. Dr. Seager and Dr. Speirs have been especially helpful in reading both manuscript and proof. Personally the compiler is indebted to Miss Elizabeth Marot, who has made the completion of the work possible, for her tireless assistance in copying and recopying manuscript. And it is a pleasure to have at last an opportunity to thank the assistants of the following libraries for their kindness in complying with requests which involved more than their usual efforts in behalf of readers. These libraries are the Library of the Philadelphia Library Association, the Library of the Drexel Institute, the Library of the University of Pennsylvania, the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia, the Library of Columbia College, the Library of the Department of Labor at Washington and the Library of the British Museum. Book Description
Excerpt from The North-West and North-East Passages 1576-1611 HE aim of the present series is to illustrate the history of geographical discovery by means of select voyages and travels. These are usually written by the discoverer himself, or by an eye-witness who accompanied him on his journey. Apart from the results achieved, they are full of interest, since they tell the story of man's bravery in feeling his way over an unknown world. The English voyages of the sixteenth century (some of which will be given in this series) record, moreover, the deeds of the seamen who laid the foundation of Britain's sea-power and of her Colonial Empire. It is hoped that these books may be of service in schools, used either as Readers, or as an aid to the teaching of Geography. John Stuart, Earl of Bute (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: J. A. Lovat-Fraser
Publisher: CUP Archive
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 128
Book Description
Excerpt from John Stuart, Earl of Bute Wortley Montagu wrote to his wife, Lady Mary, that Bute had for the next year taken the house which was Mr Stone's for £4 5 a year, which you will think extremely cheap. She (lady Bute) tells me they design to lay down their coach, and that Scotch estates bring little to London. Bute was a man of culture, and a student, and in the seclusion of his Scottish home had found congenial occupation in the study of mathematics, mechanics and botany. He continued his eccentric pursuits in his new domicile, and the future Prime Minister might have been seen looking for specimens among the fields and hedges on the banks of the Thames.
