Scientific Communication Across the Iron Curtain

Scientific Communication Across the Iron Curtain PDF Author: Christopher D. Hollings
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319253468
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 109
Book Description
This monograph provides a concise introduction to the tangled issues of communication between Russian and Western scientists during the Cold War. It details the extent to which mid-twentieth-century researchers and practitioners were able to communicate with their counterparts on the opposite side of the Iron Curtain. Drawing upon evidence from a range of disciplines, a decade-by-decade account is first given of the varying levels of contact that existed via private correspondence and conference attendance. Next, the book examines the exchange of publications and the availability of one side's work in the libraries of the other. It then goes on to compare general language abilities on opposite sides of the Iron Curtain, with comments on efforts in the West to learn Russian and the systematic translation of Russian work. In the end, author Christopher Hollings argues that physical accessibility was generally good in both directions, but that Western scientists were afflicted by greater linguistic difficulties than their Soviet counterparts whose major problems were bureaucratic in nature. This volume will be of interest to historians of Cold War science, particularly those who study communications and language issues. In addition, it will be an ideal starting pointing for anyone looking to know more about this fascinating area.

Translation and Medicine

Translation and Medicine PDF Author: Henry Fischbach
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027283265
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 180
Book Description
The contributors to Translation and Medicine address several broad aspects of medical translation, from the cultural/historic framework of the language of medicine to pragmatic considerations of register and terminology. Section 1 covers some “Historical and Cultural Aspects” that have characterized the language of medicine in Japan and Western Europe, with special emphasis on French and Spanish; Section 2 opens some vistas on “The Medical Translator in Training” with two specific university-level programs in Switzerland and in Spain, as well as an in-depth analysis of who makes the better medical translator: the medically knowledgeable linguist or the linguistically knowledgeable medical professional; and Section 3 looks at several facets of “The Translator at Work,” with discussions of the translator-client relationship and the art of audience-specific translating, an insider’s view of the Translation Unit of the National Institutes of Health, and a detailed study of online medical terminology resources.

Using the Engineering Literature, Second Edition

Using the Engineering Literature, Second Edition PDF Author: Bonnie A. Osif
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1439850038
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 600
Book Description
With the encroachment of the Internet into nearly all aspects of work and life, it seems as though information is everywhere. However, there is information and then there is correct, appropriate, and timely information. While we might love being able to turn to Wikipedia® for encyclopedia-like information or search Google® for the thousands of links on a topic, engineers need the best information, information that is evaluated, up-to-date, and complete. Accurate, vetted information is necessary when building new skyscrapers or developing new prosthetics for returning military veterans While the award-winning first edition of Using the Engineering Literature used a roadmap analogy, we now need a three-dimensional analysis reflecting the complex and dynamic nature of research in the information age. Using the Engineering Literature, Second Edition provides a guide to the wide range of resources available in all fields of engineering. This second edition has been thoroughly revised and features new sections on nanotechnology as well as green engineering. The information age has greatly impacted the way engineers find information. Engineers have an effect, directly and indirectly, on almost all aspects of our lives, and it is vital that they find the right information at the right time to create better products and processes. Comprehensive and up to date, with expert chapter authors, this book fills a gap in the literature, providing critical information in a user-friendly format.

Lexicography and Terminology

Lexicography and Terminology PDF Author: Olga Karpova
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443809411
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 205
Book Description
The present book contains a collection of works devoted to current trends in theoretical and practical lexicography, terminology and terminography. All papers are divided into two main sections. Part I: Lexicography deals with analysis of historical and typological problems in lexicography with special reference to English, Italian, Russian and Southern African dictionaries for general- and special- purposes. The main focus is given to the description of principles in lexicographic presentation of non-equivalent lexics, rhyming slang, idioms, clichés and gender nominations of people in bilingual and monolingual dictionaries. Part II: Terminology and Terminography is devoted to description of the current tendencies observed in terminology and terminography studies with special reference to modern European languages such as English, Russian, Norwegian, etc. Terms of different special domains are viewed from the angle of the latest achievements of modern science, cognitive linguistics in particular. It reveals specific features of terminological word-combinations, terms in colloquial use, peculiarities of terms belonging to newly formed Languages for Special purposes, typical features of recently appeared LSPs and presentations of new dictionaries’ projects of different subject areas. This part reveals international nature of current tendencies in terminology studies and shows the national ways of their functioning and presentation in special dictionaries.
